FEDERAL BUDGET: “DOING NOTHING IS THE RESPONSE CHOSEN BY MARK CARNEY”

PRESS RELEASE

The National Council of Unemployed Workers (NCUW) expresses its disappointment with the federal budget.

“Regarding Employment Insurance, we are far from rising to the occasion. While there is serious instability due to the trade war with the United States and job losses are mounting, Mark Carney’s government prefers to do nothing”, said Milan Bernard and Selma Lavoie, co-spokespersons for the NCUW. “We hoped that Mark Carney and his cabinet would get the severity of the current situation and the fragility of the Canadian economy, and act accordingly. They did not.”

The only progress for Employement Insurance is the extension of parental benefits to parents in the event of the death of their child. A similar measure is already in place in Quebec, through QPIP (RQAP).

The NCUW is also concerned about the austerity rhetoric put forward by the Prime Minister and the announced reversals of his predecessor’s environmental positions.

“In this context, we will continue to analyze the situation in order to propose an alternative path to the government. Doing nothing is not an option”, concluded Milan Bernard and Selma Lavoie.
