REACTION OF THE NCUW TO THE ECONOMIC AND FISCAL UPDATE

The National Council of Unemployed Workers (NCUW) wishes to react to the economic and fiscal update by the federal government:

“There are two main elements from this economic statement. First, we understand that there is some reassuring data, confirming that the deficit in the Employment Insurance account will be absorbed even faster than expected. Some were worried on the issue, but we can see that in practice, there is no concern. Second, we understand that there are no other new income support (or employment insurance) measures announced in the economic statement.

For our part, we continue our call for permanent reform of Employment Insurance, which should be a priority. To respond to the shortcomings highlighted by the crisis, the federal government has put in place major income support programs and enhanced the parameters of Employment Insurance. However, these measures remain temporary, and some have already been completed, leaving self-employed workers in particular without a social safety net. We must not turn the page: we must implement a permanent reform, expanding coverage and improving protections. “
