REACTION OF THE NCUW TO THE CHANGE OF MINISTERS RESPONSIBLE FOR EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE AND SERVICE CANADA

Press release

The National Council of Unemployed Workers (NCUW) wishes to react to the cabinet shuffle, in particular the change of ministers responsible for Employment Insurance and Service Canada.

“Carla Qualtrough’s change of portfolio and her replacement by Randy Boissonnault as Minister responsible for Employment Insurance seem to confirm that the EI reform project is dead and gone. Despite two clear mandate letters, the only result of all this noise was the organization of a long series of consultations. The reform was constantly delayed, put off. It was finally to be announced in the summer of 2022. Nothing ever happened,” said NCUW spokesperson Pierre Céré. “We will of course work with the new minister, but we remain highly skeptical.”

“In addition, NCUW groups are currently in Federal Court to challenge Service Canada’s refusal to disclose essential information on files for which we are a representative. This is a breach of justice. We hope the situation can be rectified as quickly as possible,” concluded the spokesperson.
