THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROMISED EI REFORM: WHO IS SLOWING THINGS DOWN?

The National Council of Unemployed Workers (NCUW) is launching the campaign “Who is slowing things down?”, with ads in multiple Canadian newspapers and online, asking why the government is still not moving forward with EI reform.

“All the experts, all of civil society says that EI must be reformed. It is necessary to broaden its coverage and improve its protections: the social safety net must be repaired, for a program that is simpler, fairer and better adapted to the new realities of labour,” said Pierre Céré, spokesperson for the NCUW. “Despite the government’s continuous commitments to reform and numerous consultations, nothing is assured. Is the reform blocked?”

The National Council of Unemployed Workers is particularly concerned about the situation when the temporary measures expire on September 25th. “It is unthinkable that we would even consider going back, even temporarily, to the failed and broken Employment Insurance program we have known since the 1990s,” continued the spokesperson. “We need EI reform!”

Finally, the National Council of Unemployed Workers has compiled online, at www.lecnc.com/ncuw/eireform/ the promises that still need to be kept by the federal government.

“We must move on to the next step: the time has come to implement the reform,” concluded Pierre Céré.
